Vocal Cord Surgery-Microlaryngoscopy
In those having voice disorders, every attempt should be made to identify and eliminate causative factors such as smoking, and alcohol. Drink plenty of clear fluid to avoid a dry throat… No talking or whispering is allowed. Communicate to others by writing everything down on a note pad.

Voice rest- Absolute voice rest the voice completely for two to three days, some times weeks.
Speech Therapy– Speech therapy is designed to treat the most common underlying cause of voice disorders: voice misuse and “abuse”.
The speech therapist plays an important role in the assessment and treatment of patients with voice disorders, e.g. Reinke\’s edema, vocal cord nodules and voice misuse. The therapy will take some weeks before any improvements are noticed.
Medications
Upper respiratory tract infections, e.g. acute laryngitis, are commonly caused by viral infections. Bed rest, regular paracetamol and saline or soluble aspirin gargles are often adequate. Antibiotics are only indicated when there is bacterial infection. Treatment of patients who suffer from chronic inflammation of the sinuses and nasal lining and who get catarrh dripping down the back of the throat by decongestants. Medications to reduce acid secretion by the stomach are used to treat patients with gastro-esophageal reflux (GERD). Treatment of low thyroid hormone levels help patients with voice disorders caused by hypothyroidism.
Surgery
Surgical treatments of voice disorders have improved dramatically in recent years.
Surgery is indicated for diagnosis for taking biopsy and treatment. The operation is performed with ‘telescope\’ (endoscope) under general anesthesia.
The view of the larynx is magnified with a microscope so that delicate operations can be carried out. The procedure is known as ‘Microlaryngoscopy\’ or ‘endolaryngeal microsurgery\’or ‘Suspension Laryngoscopy\’. (See the pictures)
