Loss of smell can result from a physical blockage of the nose or from damage to the olfactory area or the nerve. Patients with a deviated septum or with allergies may have nasal obstruction which prevents odors from getting to the olfactory area. Nasal polyps, small non-cancerous growths in the nose, can also block smells from entering the nose . Very rarely, loss of smell can come from benign or malignant tumors in the nose.
