What is Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty, nasal sculpture and sometimes referred to as nose job improves the appearance, shape, size and proportion of the nose, enhancing facial harmony and self confidence. Operative surgery procedure of the nose may also correct impaired breathing problems caused by structural abnormalities in the nose like a deviated nasal septum, enlarged inferior turbinates and polyps. Rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia after evaluation by the anesthetist.
Rhinoplasty or the nose surgery was first developed by Sushruta, a physician and a surgeon (often regarded as the “father of plastic surgery”) who lived in ancient India 500 BC, which he first described in his text ‘Susrutha Samhita’. He and his later student doctors and disciples used Rhinoplasty to reconstruct noses that were amputated as a punishment for social crimes. The techniques of forehead flap Rhinoplasty he developed are practiced almost unchanged to this day.
Rhinoplasty techniques: Surgery of the nose is performed by Rhinoplasty expert surgeon either using a closed procedure, where incisions are hidden inside the nose, or an open procedure (external Rhinoplasty), where an incision is made across the columella, and the narrow strip of tissue that separates the nostrils. Through these incisions, the soft tissues that cover the nose are gently raised, allowing access to reshape the structure of the nose. During surgery the skin is separated from the underlying bone and cartilage, the rhinoplasty surgeon then sculpts the bone and cartilage or molds them with sutures. The skin then is redraped over the new shape.
Nose surgery to improve an obstructed airway requires careful evaluation of the nasal structure as it relates to airflow and breathing. Correction of a deviated septum (septuplets), one of the most common causes of breathing impairment, is achieved by adjusting the nasal structure to produce better nose alignment. When nose surgery is performed to improve breathing function, this procedure is considered reconstructive Septo-Rhinoplasty.
Revision rhinoplasty is a nose operation carried out to correct or revise an unsatisfactory outcome from a previous rhinoplasty.
Non-surgical rhinoplasty refers to a procedure in which fillers are used to alter and shape a person’s nose without invasive surgery.
In some cases, Rhinoplasty is performed alone; in other cases it is used with other cosmetic plastic surgery procedures such as chin augmentation to enhance the aesthetic results. Before surgery, the doctor may perform screening and mark circles and lines on the areas of the nose to undergo Rhinoplasty and have Rhinoplasty photographs- pictures taken of the nose in different angles- so that before-and-after nose surgery photos are later available for assessment of the nose job done.
Types of Correction
Rhinoplasty can improve a nose which may be short nose, long nose or broad nose in relation to the other facial structures. Nose width, at the bridge can be corrected surgically by this procedure. The Nose profile can be changed, with visible nasal humps or depressions on the bridge corrections performed. Surgery for improving nasal tip, that may large or bulbous, drooping, or too upturned can be done. The Rhinoplasty can help to get better looks for the Nostrils that are large, wide or upturned and to improve the Nasal asymmetry and deviation.
