Cholesteatoma is invasive skin sac which continues to grow to the middle ear and mastoid. It becomes chronically infected, may erode and cause destruction to the ear structures like ossicles, facial nerve and labyrinth. Cholesteatoma removal requires surgery called a Mastoidectomy and Tympanoplasty.
