Facial nerve paralysis can be seen in patients who suffer from acute and chronic ear infections (otitis media). Sudden facial paralysis in chronic ear disease suggests damage caused by pressure on the nerve by cholesteatoma sac as in this case.
When this happens prompt surgical exploration with evacuation of disease and nerve decompression usually results in good recovery of function. The surgery done is called Mastoid exploration or Mastoidectomy.

This is done in Jubilee Christian Mission Hospital Trivandrum Kerala India.
