Hearing loss due to recurrent otitis media with effusion is common in children. This causes conductive hearing loss.If no improvement after medical treatment, a small surgical procedure -Myringotomy is done.A small incision will be made in the ear drum. If there is sticky thick fluid in the space behind the ear drum (middle ear), this will be cleared out by gentle suction.A grommet (small plastic ventilation tube) will then be placed in the ear drum. This tube will ventilate the middle ear and prevent a build up of glue again, it does not drain fluid.Grommets stay in approximately 9 months – but they can fall out a lot earlier or stay in for up to 2 years. The grommets fall out naturally by themselves which will probably not be noticed. A general anaesthetic is required so the patient will be asleep throughout the whole operation. This is performed in Jubilee Hospital, Trivandrum, Kerala, South India.
