Snoring is a noise made by vibration of soft tissues in the throat when a person is asleep.
Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is characterized by persistent sleepiness, and often a general lack of energy, even after apparently adequate night time sleep. It has been suggested that snoring alone, without conventional sleep apnea or hypopnoea, may disrupt sleep and produce substantial daytime hypersomnolence.
Excessive daytime sleepiness is the main symptom of OSAS-Obstructive Sleep Apnea, while snoring is often regarded as a harmless sign of the disorder. Other symptoms of sleep apnea include fatigue, morning headache, nocturia, and dry mouth at awakening.
Sleepy snorers have an increased risk of involvement in occupational and road traffic accidents.
The early identification and treatment of sleep-disordered breathing are important when attempting to reduce the number of job and traffic accidents in the community.
More serious, snoring and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), the main symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), are associated with hypertension, cardiac failure, stroke and diabetes.
If you have snoring and excessive daytime sleepiness, get a sleep study (Polysomnogram) in the nearest sleep lab or at home. Home sleep study is more convenient to the patients.
If diagnosed with OSA, get early treatment-
