Tongue-Tie (Ankyloglossia) is a minor, congenital anomaly and it means the frenulum ( a flap of mucus membrane under the tongue) is abnormally short. The consequences of an untreated tongue tie can be many and varied, depending largely on the age of the subject and the severity of the condition. The areas of difficulty spread to include social and domestic situations, self-esteem, the work environment, and dental health.
The specific challenges an adult with a tongue tie may face include:
o Inability to open the mouth widely affects speech and eating habits.
o Always having to watch their speech
o Inability to speak clearly when talking fast/loud/soft
o Stammering
o Effects on social situations, eating out, kissing, relationships
o Dental health, a tendency to have inflamed gums, and increased need for fillings and extractions
o Sensitivity about personal appearance
o Emotional factors resulting in rising levels of stress
o Tongue tie in the elderly often makes it difficult to keep a denture in place.
Tongue Tie and Kissing
Having tongue tied give lot of mental anguish as one progress to a sexual relationship and it proves a slight disadvantage in sexual relationship. Having a short frenum restricts normal tongue movement. They will get problems in performing French kissing. It is an issue for youngsters.
Laser Surgery in adults
Ideally tongue tie- ankyloglossia should be treated right after birth if it affects the child’s breast/ bottle feeding. Otherwise, it can be treated at age one or two in order to prevent speech problems. Kids with ankyloglossia will usually have a hard time making the “r” and “l” sounds.

Laser surgery to release tongue tie can be performed on teenagers and adults under local anesthetic. It is a simple procedure and takes only 10-15 mnts. A local anesthetic spray is all that enough in most cases. No sutures. No bleeding.No need for hospitalization.
