Anesthesia Laser Surgery ENT:Practical Considerations
The surgeries in which laser beam of light is used are called laser surgery. Here Co2 Laser is used.Laser is now widely used in ENT surgeries without using knife which at the same time reduces bleeding completely or mostly. No electro cauterization or burning by electricity is required.Laser cuts an area by simply vaporizing the targeted tissue .The surrounding area undergoes negligible changes. It is least painful. Healing of the operated area is much faster than usual.
But airway fire is one thing anesthetists are worried about. Special precuations are taken to avoid this. Each team in the operating room (ie, anesthesia, surgery, and nursing) has special expertise and responsibility in preventing and responding to a fire.
Practical considerations in giving anesthesia for patients undergoing laser surgery for snoring and obstructive sleep apnea are explained by Dr.Thomas, Senior Anesthetist in Jubilee Hospital Trivandrum, Kerala, South India. The Laser assisted uvuloplasty and laser turbinectomy and septoplasty is done by Dr.K.O.Paulose FRCS, Consultant ENT Surgeon.
