Tongue tie is a congenital anomaly which may decrease mobility of the tip of tongue and is caused by an unusually short, thick lingual frenulum, a membrane connecting the underside of the tongue to the floor of the mouth. Ankyloglossia varies in degree of severity from mild cases characterized by mucous membrane bands to complete ankyloglossia whereby the tongue is tethered to the floor of the mouth.
In infants the most common and earliest finding in relation to this condition is impaired or totally failed breast-feeding. In older children they present with articulation and speech problems.
Tongue tie laser release using laser is highly successful and relatively straightforward procedure for children and adults. Following placement of topical anesthetic, the frenulum is exposed and the tongue is elevated, stretching the frenulum as much as possible to facilitate access. Care must be taken to avoid invasion of the salivary gland and its ducts under the tongue while releasing the frenulum.
Advantages of Laser release as it involves virtually no bleeding afterward and no sutures are needed.
