Sushrutha is recognized today as the ‘Father of Plastic Surgery\’ all over the world.
Sushruta was an ancient Indian surgeon (who was possibly born in 7th century BC) and is the author of the book Sushruta Samhitha, in which he describes over 120 surgical instruments, 300 surgical procedures and classifies human surgery in 8 categories.
He is credited with performing cosmetic surgery and especially with using forehead skin to reconstruct noses which were amputated as a punishment for crimes in his era.
The Sushruta Samhita contains 184 chapters and description of 1120 illnesses, 700 medicinal plants, a detailed study on Anatomy, 64 preparations from mineral sources and 57 preparations based on animal sources. It is the main reference book for ayurvedic surgeons.
Surgery in India reached admirable heights during the era of Sushrutha. We are proud to have such a genius as the pioneer of our surgical heritage.
