(Dr.Thomas the senior anesthetist in Jubilee Hospital Trivandrum Kerala South India narrates the pre anesthetic evaluation procedures for patients undergoing ENT Surgery.)
Here in Jubilee Hospital Trivandrum, Kerala, India, all patients undergoing ENT or any other surgery will be administered anesthesia in one of its various forms so that the surgical procedure is made painless.
The patient is evaluated by one of the anesthetist with results of basic investigations like blood, chest X-ray and ECG. The anesthetist will assess the patient for fitness to undergo anesthesia and surgery. The assessment includes a physical examination and a detailed medical history of any other ailments like hypertension, heart disease, Diabetes, Asthma etc. that may be present, now or in the past, and the medication being taken for the same. It gives an idea about the state of the heart, lungs and other systems of the body.
If there is any concurrent disease it should be treated and well controlled prior to surgery for the safe conduct of anesthesia and surgery. Previous history of surgery and outcome both of anesthesia and surgery will be useful.
If necessary the anesthetist will order further investigations or refer the patient to other specialists for evaluation and treatment of concurrent diseases that may be present, to bring it under control.
Based on the pre-anesthetic assessment the anaesthetist explains to the patient the preliminary pre-requisites prior to surgery, like, fasting, drugs to be taken, etc. and time of admission and finally the type of anesthesia that will be administered.
