(Sepgard Solution and gel containing 1% feracrylum, is marketed by Themis Medicare in India)
Feracrylum is an incomplete iron salt of polyacrylic acid with a molecular weight of more than 100000 Daltons. It is a biocompatible, biodegradable polymer. This polymer is hygroscopic in nature, soluble in water, non absorbable in the system and forms complexes when in contact with blood, and thus exerts haemostatic action. Because of its high molecular weight it is not getting absorbed hence very safe.
Feracrylum combines with blood proteins, especially albumin and forms a gel-like substance, which forms a physical barrier on wound surface and stops capillary bleeding and oozing.
The unique inherent antimicrobial property of these synthetic polyacrylates simultaneously prevents bacterial growth on and near the wound site.
It has antibacterial and antifungal properties. It is effective against all common Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria and common pathogenic fungi found in wound.
I find Feracrylum solution and gel as an ideal haemostatic agent for intra and post-operative local application during ENT Surgery like controlling bleeding after Tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy, and Nasal surgery. Since it is hygroscopic, it absorbs water and don\’t get dry when used as nasal packs in epistaxis. Because of its antimicrobial action, it prevents post-operative infection. It is ideal for irrigation of burn site and after wound debridement.
