The microdebrider is a three component instrument. First, the disposable blade is a hollow metal tube coupled to suction that cuts obstructing tissue and simultaneously removes it from the airway. Second, the hand piece drives the blade via an electrically powered motor and is compatible with blades of various sizes and configurations.

The main risk of microdebriders is the possibility of removal of normal tissue, which can happen if overzealous suction pressure is used. The operator should always maintain adequate visualization of the blade or bur and be aware of using the instrument too aggressively.Although the microdebrider is a promising tool, it should be used with appropriate respect and vigilance for potential complications.

Here Nasal Polyps are removed by Microdebrider in Jubilee Hospital while performing FESS.

Nasal polyposis is often encountered in rhinology practice. Those who fail conservative management, a definitive surgery is essential to achieve sufficient ventilation and drainage of the affected sinuses by using either microdebrider or conventional instruments for functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS).
