Heart Worm (Dirofilariasis) Excised from Face


Dirofilariasis is the disease caused by Dirofilaria worm infections-“heartworm disease” and is caused by D. immitis. Surgical removal of the worm is the treatment of choice.
Here middle aged lady presented with a painful nodule under the cheek and CT with contrast imaging showed a well defined sac with Dirifilaria worm inside.Excision thru a caldwel luc approach removed the sac and the specimen is sent for Histopathological examination.(Histopathology examination confirms Dirofilaria)

Dirofilaria Worm in the Face – Surgical Removal


Human dirofilariasis typically manifests as either subcutaneous nodules or as lung parenchyma disease. Patients infected with D. repensnotice a subcutaneous lump in the affected area which most commonly includes; face and conjunctiva of the eye and sometimes chest wall, upper arms, thighs, abdominal wall and male genitalia. Ocular involvement is usually periorbital, orbital, subconjunctival, or subtenon infection.Human D. immitis infection has been associated with the human pulmonary dirofilariasis and is usually asymptomatic. Those with symptoms have cough, chest pain, fever, and pleural effusion.
Here a Dirofilarial cyst in the sublabial area is removed by a Caldwel Luc approach.(Histopathology examination confirms Dirofilaria)
